Flooded basement

When  I signed off on Friday I was excited for a quiet weekend with lots of reading time.  Well that meant that I actually got zero pages of The Help read.  We discovered on Saturday afternoon that our basement had flooded.  yikes!  3-4″ of water everywhere.  The sump pump stopped working sometime over night (during the rain storm no doubt).  Thankfully the plumber was able to install a new sump pump and the basement dried out quickly.  We feel fortunate that most of our stuff was up on shelves, in plastic tubs, etc.  We only lost some cardboard boxed, and carpet remnants.

The Help

So while the latest buzz is about The Hunger Games and the movie opening this weekend, I am finally getting a chance to read The Help.  I have been waiting patiently on my libraries wait list to read The Help on my kindle.  I was 23rd in line when I signed up.  I just got the book this week and am so excited.  I am hoping for lots of free time this weekend to read, or there will be late nights ahead as I stay up to read the book.

Do you have a favorite book?

strawberry shortcake

Yummy!  I love Strawberry Shortcake.  What is not to love about this summertime dessert?  We love it so much that we sometimes just call it dinner.  I have also been known to throw blueberries and raspberries on as well… the more fruit the merrier 🙂

Classic Strawberry Shortcakes

I follow the recipe on the back of the the Heart Smart Bisquick box, however, reducing the 1/2 sugar for the strawberries to just a tablespoon.

What a Glorious Weekend!

Our streak of record breaking heat continues.  My husband was working all weekend so the kids and I were planning on playing in the backyard and the basement (to cool off).  Surprise, Surprise.  There was a scheduling mix up at work.  My husband was suddenly off all weekend.  48 hours as a family with nothing planned.  It was Glorious!!

We took full advantage of the lucky break.  We decided there would always be an opportunity to earn money, but we would never get this weekend back.  So off we went.  The Children’s Museum, shopping, the zoo, the playground, stopping for frozen yogurt.  We (and the kids) were exhausted.  but it was so much fun.

We topped off our weekend with one of our favorite “summertime” dinners – strawberry shortcake (I will share our recipe with you  next time).

I loved our weekend, even though my week is being spent catching up on cleaning, laundry, laundry and laundry, I loved having the weekend to just play.

Getting things done

The taste of spring (if it is 80 degrees on March 16th can I call it spring, or is that summer) weather has given me some of my motivation back.  I have taken a walk (outside of course) everyday, the laundry is current and I am decluttering once again.  I love giving myself a 5 minute deadline and see how many things I can pick up, what drawer can I go through, what can I dust real quick, etc…  I am enjoying cleaning (gasp) little by little and it is working for us.  So for today, I will take it.  Let’s see what next week brings.

The First Taste of Spring

I love the first days of spring.  The warm air, the open windows, the flowers budding.  I always view it as a renewal period, a so-called rebirth.  Work has gotten busy, but I have tried to stay focused and productive on the home front as well.  The carpets have been cleaned (the windows are open) the toy room is getting reorganized (again), and I have gotten outside for walks daily.  I have re-realized and need to remember that 20-30 minutes of me time walking or reading or listening to music is ESSENTIAL to the balance in my life.  So often I forget and get so run down.  My goals are not complete, the house isn’t spotless, the laundry is current, I am behind at work, etc…  but the stress level is down, way down, as I am remembering to take just a little time for me.

So thank you Mother Nature for blessing Indiana with spring (almost summer like weather) on these last days of winter.  I have loved getting outside to enjoy all that you have to offer.

Getting Lost…

…in a book that is.  I love when a book can capture me and I am completely engrossed by it.  I just finished The Real Deal by Fern Michaels.  I enjoy Fern Michaels books.  I feel she does a great job on character development.  I am always a bit sad to finish one of her books, I feel like I am saying good-bye to a friend.  If you haven’t read them, check out her sisterhood series.  They are outstanding!

So while I enjoyed finishing the book, the housework, laundry, exercise, etc..  have suffered.  Back to the routine today.

The Ides of March are Upon Us

Spring is just around the corner and with spring comes fresh hope!  I love Spring.  I hate the winter blahs.  So, I am all about moving forward and planning (more planning then doing, but I am working on it)

How did your February resolutions end up?  Here are mine…

  • Workout 2 times a week – almost – the last two weeks have been really good (3 workouts each)
  • review finances – always in progress
  • organize my cookbook cabinet – nope, but I did the toyroom instead, does that count?
  • scrapbook – oops – forgot this was on my list

And here are my March resolutions

  • workout consistently
  • organize my cookbook cabinet
  • go through kids clothes and see what they outgrew during the winter months

I hope you are enjoying some of the taste of spring that Mother Nature has blessed us with yesterday and today.
